Expert care for diagnosis and treatment of congenital coronary anomalies
Congenital coronary anomalies are the second leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. This condition involves an abnormal or “anomalous” origin of the coronary arteries which supply the heart with oxygenated blood. It is a rare condition, affecting less than 1% of the general population. Our congenital coronary anomaly team specializes in diagnosing this condition with non-invasive imaging, including stress tests. It is the only program in North Texas to provide specialized care focused on coronary anomalies. The comprehensive care provided encompasses a collaborative approach with the family with a focus on safe return to sports, often without need for surgery.
Signs that your child may have a coronary anomaly can include:
- Syncope (loss of consciousness) during or shortly after exercise
- Chest Pain
- Family history of congenital coronary anomaly
If your child has any cardiac symptoms related to exercise, our pediatric cardiologists can evaluate for any cardiac causes with an ultrasound (echocardiogram) and electrocardiogram.
